"Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" is the second single past American singer-actress Cher from her 2d album, The Sonny Side of Chér. Written past her then-husband Sonny Bono and released in 1966, the vocal reached No. three in the UK Singles Chart and No. ii on the Billboard Hot 100 for a single week (behind "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration" by The Righteous Brothers), somewhen becoming one of Cher'southward biggest-selling singles of the 1960s.[i] [2]

History [edit]

The single proved successful, charting high in several countries worldwide. It became Cher's first million-selling single and her first acme iii hit in the UK (and her last until "The Shoop Shoop Song (Information technology's in His Kiss)" reached No. 1 in 1991). Critic Tim Sendra, in his anthology review of The Sonny Side of Cher, gave the song a mixed review: "The merely track that has any existent zest is the Bono-written novelty 'Bang Bang (My Babe Shot Me Down)', the kind of dramatic vocal Cher could knock out in her sleep only as well a vocal with no existent heart."[3] On the other manus, the reviewer for Cashbox said the song was "inventive", and predicted it would become a "blockbuster" hit. The reviewer praised its "plaintive, blues-soaked" style, equally well as the "interesting Gypsy-ish backing".[4]

In 1987, Cher recorded a stone version of the song for her 1987 Platinum-certified comeback anthology Cher. Produced by Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, and Desmond Child, the song featured backing vocals past Jon Bon Jovi and Michael Bolton, among others, and was released every bit a promotional single in 1988. Cher performed this version on her Heart of Rock Bout and on Living Proof: The Goodbye Tour, and it was played instrumentally on the Dressed to Impale Bout in 2014, Classic Cher in 2017–2020, and the Hither We Get Once again Tour in 2018–2020.

He wrote that "the band plays a bossa-nova take on the song while Gaga sings solo", adding that the vocaliser "more often than not leans away from the song's natural melodrama — until she belts the final verse with full diva theatrics."[31] Rand Duren from The Dallas Morning News idea that Gaga "goes into 'Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Downward)' in total forcefulness with a masterful interpretation and solid vocals".[35] Erin Strecker from Billboard chosen Gaga'south rendition "incredible" and said that her "version is all big notes and dramatic tension.
